A 2.5 magnitude earthquake was reported in Maryland; Officials assess the damage

COLUMBIA, MD – A magnitude 2.5 earthquake was recorded on Monday, October 27, 2025 at 5:17 p.m. in Howard County, epicenter in the Columbia/Savage area, according to the USGS.

Police and fire officials said they are aware of the event and are surveying any possible damage. No injuries or damage had been reported as of early Monday evening.

Earthquakes of this size are usually minor, and although they are sometimes felt by people nearby, they rarely cause structural damage. Residents who felt shaking are encouraged to share their experiences through the USGS's “Did You Feel It?” Survey to help improve density mapping.

Although earthquakes are uncommon in Maryland, the state experiences minor tremors from time to time. In April 2024, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake near Lebanon, New Jersey, was felt throughout much of the mid-Atlantic, including parts of Maryland. A 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia in August 2011 was also widely felt throughout the region.
