A strong, shallow M6.0 earthquake strikes western Türkiye

The epicenter was located 8 km (5 mi) southeast of Senderci (population 10,907), 24 km (15 mi) southeast of Beyjadeş (population 15,242), 29 km (18 mi) north of Gordes (population 11,168), 39 km (24 mi) west-northwest of Demirci (population 21,378), and 59 km (37 mi) southeast Balikesir (population 238,151), Türkiye.

It is estimated that 12,000 people felt severe vibration, 15,000 very strong, 55,000 strong, 599,000 moderate, 10,850,000 mild, and 10,379,000 weak.

The USGS issued a yellow alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. Some injury and damage is likely to occur, and the impact should be relatively local. Estimated economic losses are less than 1% of Turkey's GDP.

In general, residents of this area reside in structures that are a mixture of weak and earthquake-resistant buildings. The predominant weak building types are mud brick and masonry/stone block construction.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards, such as landslides, which may have contributed to the losses.

The earthquake was felt in a wide area of ​​western and northwestern Türkiye, including Izmir, Manisa, Bursa, and Istanbul, and the tremors lasted for several seconds.

Several buildings collapsed in Senderji, including three previously classified as severely damaged and a two-storey commercial building. Most structural failures occurred in old and weak structures. Light to moderate damage was reported in Balikesir city and surrounding areas, with walls cracked and the facades of some buildings partially collapsed.

Governor Ismail Ustaoglu said 22 people sought hospital treatment, most of them for minor injuries sustained while fleeing the buildings. Four of them were treated and released. No deaths have been confirmed.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that search and assessment teams were immediately deployed, and that “there have been no casualties so far.”

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported several aftershocks following the main event, the largest of which was felt locally but did not cause new landslides. Damage assessment work began early on October 28, focusing on structures already classified as unsafe following the August 2025 earthquakes.

As a precaution, schools in Balikesir District were closed on October 28 to allow inspection of public buildings. Power and communications were briefly cut in the Senderji area, but were restored within hours.
