A strong earthquake strikes western Türkiye and was felt by residents of major cities

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Senderci district of Balikesir at 10:48 pm local time (1948 GMT) on Monday, shaking homes across western Turkey and sending residents fleeing into the streets. The agency said on social media that emergency teams were sent to assess damage and losses. The tremor was felt by residents of many neighboring provinces, including Istanbul, Bursa and Izmir.

Television footage broadcast by Turkish channel NTV showed people rushing outside as buildings swayed, while videos posted online showed buildings collapsing. Authorities urged residents to avoid damaged buildings until they are inspected to ensure their safety.

The earthquake comes just two months after another 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the same area, killing one person and injuring 29 others.
