UCLA Engineering researchers push steel to breaking point in simulated earthquakes

A large-scale steel seismic connection test at the Grady E. Harville Center for Civil Engineering Research and Education on Tuesday, October 22.

Researchers at the University of Arkansas College of Engineering successfully demonstrated the limits of structural steel, conducting a large-scale seismic connection test of the steel designed to evaluate performance under extreme earthquake forces.

The demonstration took place on October 22 at the Grady E. Harvell Civil Engineering Research and Education Center (CEREC), a 37,400-square-foot state-of-the-art testing facility on the university's campus.

Live testing demonstrated the capabilities of the CEREC facility, where researchers subject large-scale structural components to extreme conditions. By testing materials and structural systems at this scale, engineers can better understand how buildings respond to seismic activity and identify potential failure modes.

“We successfully tested a roof-level steel frame connection for the American Institute of Steel Construction, verifying performance under conditions simulating extreme seismic forces,” said Gary Prinz, professor of civil engineering. “Projects like this require a lot of collaboration from so many talented individuals. Being able to showcase their hard work and this research in front of an engaged audience has been rewarding. It shows the real-world impact of the work happening here at CEREC.”
