An earthquake strikes off the Oregon coast near Newport

NEWPORT OREGON (KPTV) – An earthquake was reported Wednesday off the Oregon coast, west of Newport around 6 a.m.

The quake measured 5.4, according to a report from the US Geological Survey (USGS), at a depth of about 6.2 miles.

This area is seismically active and it is not uncommon for earthquakes to be reported. Several earthquakes have been reported this year off the coast of Oregon, which is located in the Cascadia region, a fault line 700 miles long.

Scientists expect that there is a high chance of an earthquake of magnitude 9 or greater occurring on this fault line within the next 50 years.
