Earthquake reconstruction wins top award for architectural design

A post-earthquake rebuilt house with a budget of just over $600,000 has been named New Zealand's best house in the 2025 ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Fabric's Mitchell Cole took the top award for his redesign of an earthquake-damaged villa in the Christchurch suburb of Somerfield.

Working within design and budget constraints, many elements of the original building were retained including the garage, fences and driveway.

“We took into account the owner's environmental values ​​and limited budget; our initial discussions encouraged a forever home mentality and retention of on-site items.”

The design expanded on this aesthetic and considered the couple's “love for some of the more traditional elements of their previous home,” Cole said.

“After the earthquake, this project emphasizes the importance of preserving embodied memory through material recycling and transportable design.

The home also received the 2025 ADNZ Resene National Award for a New Home up to 150sqm and the ADNZ Resene Kaitiakitanga National Award.
