A magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes an area near Chitral

PMD continues to monitor the area, and advises the public to remain alert for any aftershocks

A moderate magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck near Chitral on November 1 at 14:50 PST, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 50 km, and its epicenter was about 90 km northeast of Chitral at coordinates 36.56 degrees north, 72.29 degrees east.

The authorities did not announce any casualties or damage, and there were no immediate reports of the tremor being felt in the surrounding areas.

PMD continues to monitor seismic activity in the area and advises residents to remain alert for any aftershocks.

Why do earthquakes happen?

A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan in late August 2025, devastating remote mountain communities, killing more than 2,200 people and injuring 3,600 others. The epicenter of the earthquake was near Jalalabad, close to the Pakistani border, and its depth was shallow – about five to eight kilometers – which intensified the destruction.
