The New Madrid earthquake near Lake Wapabilo, Missouri, on Saturday

Here's something you didn't hear today. There has just been an earthquake near Lake Wapabilo in Missouri. This means that the new Madrid bug has decided to shake a new part of the country today.

UPDATE: The USGS has now upgraded this earthquake from a magnitude of 2.4 to a 2.6.

The US Geological Survey has just confirmed that an earthquake occurred near Wapapello Lake State Park at 11:23 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, and the New Madrid Fault is again occurring near Wapapello in Missouri.

It was not a major earthquake by any means as it measured 2.4 on the Richter scale. It's an interesting location because you usually see the New Madrid Fault earthquakes either in the heel of the shoe in Missouri or in northern Arkansas. When an earthquake occurs north in Missouri, small aftershocks are usually closer to the St. Louis area if this is the case. I can't remember seeing an earthquake near Lake Wapabilo.

I'm also surprised that no one reported feeling this earthquake since Lake Wapabilo is a frequently visited area. However, a 2.4 earthquake wouldn't be something that would immediately catch your attention even if it happened directly below you.

Does this mean that a major earthquake in New Madrid is imminent?

Absolutely not. The only reason I ask this is because this question is almost always asked when the New Madrid Seismic Zone does something unusual. It's just another reminder that southern Missouri is part of one of the most active (and sometimes bizarre) seismic regions in the country.
