A 6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes northern Afghanistan; Felt all over Pakistan

A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck northern Afghanistan and was felt in Pakistan, India and other neighboring countries, according to initial reports.

The quake occurred at 1:29 a.m. local time on Monday and was epicentered in Afghanistan near the borders with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, according to seismologists with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the USGS, the epicenter was about 23 kilometers (14 mi) south of Kholm, Afghanistan, and 51 kilometers (32 mi) east-southeast of Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. The earthquake was shallow, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

Reports on social media indicate that the quake was felt as far away as Kabul in Afghanistan, Mashhad in Iran, Islamabad in Pakistan, and areas near the Pakistan-India border.

“Oh my God, the most terrifying and dangerous earthquake I have ever seen,” user Fazal Afghan said in a post on X.

Damage was reported in Mazar-i-Sharif, a city of more than 300,000 people located near the epicenter. A photo circulated on social media showed large cracks and debris inside a house, while others described feeling “violent” shaking in the city.

Afghanistan is vulnerable to frequent and sometimes devastating earthquakes due to its location near the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Earthquakes in this region are usually felt over a wide area.
