At around 1 a.m. local time on Monday, November 3, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, according to the BBC, Sky News and the Associated Press.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) issued an orange alert as the quake measured 17 miles deep, according to the outlet. The orange alert indicated that “significant” losses were expected.

The Afghan Ministry of Public Health confirmed, in a post on Facebook, that the earthquake struck Samangan and Balkh provinces.

“Initial reports indicate more than 15 people have been killed and about 320 others injured, although rescue efforts are continuing and numbers are subject to change,” the caption read.

In the clip, spokesperson Dr. Sharafat Zaman Ammar said local hospitals had been asked to “be ready to receive more patients,” also noting that casualty numbers were likely to rise.

PEOPLE contacted the Afghan National Police and the Afghan Ministry of Public Health for further comment, but did not immediately receive a response.

In a later update, a Public Health Ministry official said at least 20 people had died so far.

Deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Hamdullah Fitrat, wrote on Twitter: “We learned with great regret that due to the earthquake that occurred last night in Samangan, Balkh, Baghlan, Kunduz and many other provinces, a number of Afghans were martyred and injured, large numbers of homes were destroyed, and financial damages were incurred.”

He added, “The Islamic Emirate extends its condolences to the families of the victims, prays for the highest paradise for the martyrs, and a speedy recovery for the wounded, and offers its condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.”

He continued: “In addition, the Islamic Emirate directs all concerned officials and departments to deliver medical aid, food supplies and other forms of assistance to the affected areas, make efforts to rescue those trapped under the rubble, and take the necessary measures regarding assisting families and providing tents and other basic needs.”

Monday's earthquake comes after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan in August, killing more than 1,100 people, according to the BBC.
