A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan near Mazar-i-Sharif at 00:59 local time, causing major casualties and damage in Samangan and Balkh provinces. At least 20 deaths and 863 infections were reported across the affected areas, with Samangan (11 deaths and 270 infections) and Balkh (9 deaths and 593 infections) being the worst affected. More than 400 patients received treatment in private hospitals for injuries resulting from the earthquake. Partial damage was reported to several health facilities, including the Bulghali Primary Health Center (WHO-supported) in Semanghan, while the Semanghan Provincial Hospital laboratory collapsed, destroying vital medical equipment, as well as the Hayatan Primary Health Center in Balkh Province supported by the Health Emergency Response Project. Emergency response operations continue, with health teams, rescue units and humanitarian partners mobilized to provide life-saving medical care and supplies. WHO and its partners are coordinating closely with local health authorities to support assessments, deploy emergency supplies, and ensure continuity of care for those infected.

Situation overview

A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan near Mazar-i-Sharif at approximately 00:59 local time on 3 November 2025, causing tragic loss of life, hundreds of injuries and damage to health facilities in Samangan and Balkh provinces.

Initial reports from health facilities indicate at least 20 deaths and 863 infections across the affected areas. In Samangan, 11 people lost their lives and 270 were injured, while 9 deaths and more than 590 infections were reported in Balkh. More than 400 patients were treated in private hospitals in Balkh for injuries resulting from the earthquake.
