Survivors of a powerful earthquake that destroyed homes in Afghanistan are now struggling to find shelter as they face torrential rains and the looming cold of winter.

Their concerns are shared by those who survived a more devastating earthquake two months ago.

The latest 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the northern provinces of Samangan and Balkh, killing at least 27 people, according to Taliban authorities.

In the Kholm district of Samangan, where the earthquake was centered, a resident named Gulab Uddin feels sad for his daughter-in-law, who was unable to escape from the family home in time. Gulab Uddin himself suffered a head injury as a result of falling debris.

“We lost all our belongings,” he told AFP. “Winter is coming. We have children between four and five years old. Where can we go? For two nights, we have been staying with our relatives.”

Rain has turned dirt paths into mud puddles around collapsed walls and roofs. Similar devastation was evident in eastern Afghanistan following a 6.0 magnitude superficial earthquake in late August that killed more than 2,200 people – the deadliest earthquake in Afghanistan's modern history.

In the mountain village of Mazar Dara in Kunar province, Pazarga Savai witnessed children being swept away during the previous earthquake. Two months later, she fears the cold weather could kill more people.

Savai, a 50-year-old farmer who lost two relatives in the previous earthquake, now shares a tent with 15 people, including 12 children. “We got a tent, but it's not suitable for winter,” she explained.

Most villagers sleep outdoors in gardens or on balconies for fear of staying in their damaged homes as aftershocks continue. They face temperatures approaching -20°C (-4°F) without adequate winter clothing or blankets.

“The earthquake occurred in the summer, and the organizations provided aid based on the needs at that time,” explained Najibullah Hanafi, the Taliban’s media official in Kunar. “Now that winter is coming, they need clothes and things that can help them survive the cold.”

Despite these difficult circumstances, international relief organizations warn that their aid will be limited as major donors, led by the US government, withdraw their funding.

Camps have been set up at the base of Mount Mazar Dara, but the International Organization for Migration reports that 77% of survivors intend to stay put over the winter – either because they cannot afford to move or have nowhere else to go.

For many, rebuilding stronger homes is the only option, even if it means abandoning traditional stone construction. Taliban authorities claim to be building dozens of new homes in Dara Mazar, although journalists saw only one bulldozer clearing the rubble.

“We need to rebuild the right way, with concrete and bricks,” said farmer Syed Wali Safai, 27.

Resident Awal Jan added: “We want to rebuild our house in the same place, but not in the same way. If we don’t want our house to collapse again, only concrete will work.”
