Earthquakes caused by fracturing do not threaten the stability of dams

Construction began on the river in June at the site C dam to prepare for the river diversion in autumn. BC Hydro / PNG

Earthquakes from fracturing activities and injection wells are not large enough to threaten the stability of our Peace Zone dams.

BC Hydro’s top priority is the safety of the public and our employees, including the safe operation and maintenance of all our dams across the province.

Earthquakes caused by fracturing activities and injection wells are not large enough to threaten the stability of our Peace Zone dams, including the site C. The vast majority of these earthquakes are so small that they can only be detected by highly sensitive devices.

There was no damage – cracking or otherwise – at the Site C dam site due to any of the earthquakes recorded in the area. Even the 4.5-magnitude earthquake that occurred nearly two years ago about 20 kilometers from Site C caused no damage to any of the structures or their foundations.

The Site C dam is designed and built in accordance with international and Canadian dam safety practices to withstand major events, including severe earthquakes and floods. The project design takes into account the full range of possible earthquake magnitudes in the Peace Zone, and is built to withstand earthquakes of a magnitude much larger than anything recorded in the area. We are building it to withstand the ground movements of earthquakes that are only expected to occur once every 10,000 years at that location.

Additionally, there is a five-kilometer buffer zone around our facilities where new permits for crushing and digging cannot be issued. BC Hydro will continue to work with the Oil and Gas Commission as well as Oil and Gas Operators to ensure our infrastructure remains secure.

Chris O’Reilly, President and CEO, BC Hydro

Something to think about

If someone near you chooses – and is getting close – not to spend two seconds wearing a mask to protect themselves and others from catching COVID-19, what are the odds of frequent, thorough, and effective washing of their hands for 20-plus seconds?

Life is not normal

The British Columbia government said on Monday that enforcement of the law on social distancing is coming. Fabulous!

Studies say behaviors are learned in 66 days. In March, British Columbia restrictions on COVID-19 took effect. By June, social distancing should have become an old hat. Unfortunately, it is not. It’s clear that party guys don’t follow social distancing guidelines, but it’s not just guys that are to blame.

A poll by Ipsos in May found that 40 percent of Canadians are not estranging from society. Psychologists say that when people do something difficult after a while, they stop. There are theories that say if people wear masks they will feel that social distancing is not necessary. Error. Dr. Bonnie Henry spoke repeatedly about the layers of protection: hand washing, social distancing and masking. It is not about choice and choice. People used to step aside to others on the sidewalk or in the store. not now.

It is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Life seems normal. But a friendly reminder, it’s not. If the British Columbia government were to enforce social distancing rules, I’d say great.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
