A 6.9 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Japan and the threat of a tsunami has passed

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck northern Japan on Sunday evening, followed by several other tremors, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Initially, a tsunami warning was issued, but it was later cancelled. Some waves reaching a height of 20 cm were recorded in some areas.

The earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture, at a depth of 10 kilometers below sea level, at approximately 5 p.m. Japan time.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, or any reports of malfunctions at the two nuclear power plants in the area.

A tsunami up to one meter high was expected along the northern coast, and the warning remained in place for an hour after the initial quake.

Express trains in the area were temporarily delayed, according to rail operator JR East. Local news reports said the earthquakes also caused power outages.

A JMA official said in a press conference on Sunday evening that earthquakes of similar or stronger intensity may occur in the next few days.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaishi posted a message on her X account, urging people to stay away from the coast and remain alert in anticipation of aftershocks and tsunami waves that could hit the area.

Tsunamis that follow earthquakes can continue for a few hours afterward, hitting the coast repeatedly, and may increase in size over time. More earthquakes, which could be aftershocks, are also continuing in Iwate Prefecture.
