This Community Voices publication serves as an inter-agency accountability platform that consolidates insights from earthquake-affected communities in Balkh and Samangan provinces in northern Afghanistan. It is designed to inform humanitarian responders, the sub-national Inter-Cluster Coordination Team (ICCG), the National Inter-Cluster Coordination Team (ICCT) and the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) by highlighting the urgent needs, priorities and perceptions of affected people – especially those of women and girls. The bulletin ensures that the ongoing earthquake response remains community-centred, inclusive and accountable, enabling collective reflection and adaptation as recovery efforts continue.

Overview of earthquake impact

On November 3, 2025, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan, severely impacting Balkh and Samangan provinces and damaging neighboring Sar-i-Pul and Jawzjan provinces. The earthquake killed 25 people and injured nearly 1,000 others, with the largest number of casualties reported in Balkh and Samangan.

Assessments confirmed damage to 795 homes, of which 305 were destroyed and 490 were partially damaged. The most affected areas are Firuz Nakhshir, Kholm and Hazrat Sultan in Samangan, and Sholgara and Marmul in Balkh. Many families are still living in temporary shelters, facing the harsh winter with limited access to basic services.
