$550,000 Oklahoma earthquake destroys class action settlement

Three oil and gas companies have agreed to pay a total of $555,000 to settle allegations that their wastewater disposal wells caused earthquakes in Oklahoma that resulted in property damage.

The Oklahoma Earthquake Settlement benefits anyone who owned property in Oklahoma between January 19, 2019, and February 2, 2024, and whose property suffered damage from earthquakes, aftershocks, and aftershocks.

The Oklahoma earthquake class action settlement resolves a class action lawsuit alleging that Spess Oil Co. Circle 9 Resources and Culbreath Oil & Gas Co. Inc. It has caused earthquakes in Oklahoma with its wastewater disposal wells. The plaintiffs in the case say these earthquakes caused damage to their property.

The three companies did not admit to any wrongdoing but agreed to a $555,000 settlement to resolve the allegations in the class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Oklahoma earthquake settlement, class members could receive a cash payment based on the amount of damage to their property from the earthquakes.

The settlement will be divided into two areas based on the location of the affected properties. Region A includes Lincoln, Payne, Logan, Oklahoma, Cleveland, Pottawatomie, Seminole, Okfuski, and Creek counties in Oklahoma. District B includes all other counties in Oklahoma.

Ninety percent of the settlement fund will be used to pay claims from Area A, while 10% will be used to pay claims from Area B. If the total amount claimed by Class Members is less than the Total Settlement Fund, all Class Members will receive a pro rata payment. If the total amount claimed exceeds the Settlement Fund, Class Members will receive a proportionate share of the Net Settlement Fund based on the amount they have claimed.

The deadline for exclusion was September 27, 2025, and the deadline for objection was October 10, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the Oklahoma earthquake settlement was held on October 20, 2025.

To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by January 25, 2026.
