A major 5.3-magnitude seismic event disrupted Cyprus on Wednesday morning, sending tremors across the eastern Mediterranean basin while prompting temporary evacuations in the western Paphos area, although authorities confirmed no structural damage had occurred.

Around 11:30 a.m., residents of Cyprus felt the ground shaking, triggering evacuations across the island as workers and students evacuated buildings, local media reported. Residents of Haifa and other parts of northern Israel also reported their homes shaking. The initial earthquake generated six additional seismic events while the communications infrastructure experienced temporary operational failures. The European Mediterranean Seismological Center placed the epicenter at 31 miles (50 kilometers) west of Limassol and 11 miles (18 kilometers) north of Paphos at a depth of 13.2 miles (21.2 kilometers), although the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory in Athens measured the quake's strength at 5.1, local media reported.

Local media reported that subsequent tremors occurred within minutes, reaching magnitudes of 3.5, 3.6, 4.7, 2.3, 2.5, and 3.9, with communications networks exposed to immediate technical difficulties. Thousands of employees were moved to open areas for safety, while educational facilities directed students to gather in courtyards under the supervision of a coach.

Local media reported that the urban center and coastal areas of Larnaca recorded the most intense activity, with the long duration generating particular concern among occupants of high-rise buildings. Despite great concerns, authorities confirmed that no structural damage or casualties occurred. Apartment residents and office workers have temporarily left the buildings awaiting official information.

Local media reported that the earthquake extended to the coastal areas of Famagusta and Paralimni. Likewise, Famagusta District Police verified that there were no casualties or property damage throughout the affected areas.

The Cyprus Geological Surveys documented the earthquake at 11:32 a.m. local time (9:32 a.m. GMT), and the epicenter was located 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) northeast of Paphos on the island's west coast, with the event occurring 15 kilometers (10 miles) below the surface, according to The Independent. The Independent newspaper indicated that state television confirmed that temporary evacuations had taken place in public facilities throughout the Paphos region immediately after the earthquake.
