Terminating NOAA's contract with the Alaska Earthquake Center could have ramifications in the PNW

Losing the center could mean a delay in issuing tsunami warnings along the West Coast.

SEATTLE – As the Trump administration looks to cut funding and resources for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), we've learned that the agency has cut ties with the Alaska Earthquake Epicenter.

Losing the center could mean a delay in issuing tsunami warnings along the West Coast. The accuracy of these alerts depends on the quality of the data.

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network operates more than 600 seismic stations. In Alaska, the center added 250 additional stations, working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in real time to ensure warnings are accurate and timely.

Harold Tobin, director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network and a professor at the University of Wisconsin, told KING 5 that the move means monitoring centers will receive less information to base their assessment of seismic events. This could also delay warnings for events outside Alaska by minutes, and reduce the quality of the warnings, including the strength of the event. Both of these steps are “steps backwards” in being able to warn people about deadly events, Tobin said.

Neither the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network nor the Alaska Earthquake Center expected this to happen, Tobin said. However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service previously experienced job cuts as the Trump administration worked to cut government spending.

Fortunately, Tobin said, the cuts do not affect the seismic network's work to expand stations in the Pacific Northwest and add underwater seismometers off the West Coast. By 2026, scientists hope to add underwater seismometers off the Oregon coast to monitor tremors on the ocean floor as well.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
