AC/DC concert rocks Melbourne all night with low-level earthquake recordings

Was it the drums? Did they turn the power up too high?

AC/DC's Wednesday night concert in Melbourne was recorded using earthquake detection equipment, as the rock icons played their first concert in Australia in a decade.

Adam Pascal, a senior scientist at the Center for Earthquake Research, said the concert recorded in the 2-5 Hz range at their office in Richmond, about three and a half kilometers from the concert at the MCG – enough for people to feel the ground shaking.

“The sound waves that people were experiencing close by and feeling something through their bodies are equivalent to what our seismographs sense,” Pascal said.

“We capture ground motion, not sound from the air.

“So, you have speakers on the ground pumping out the vibrations and they are transmitted through the ground, but also the crowd jumping up and down feeds the energy into the ground.”

Crowd activity often has the biggest impact on a concert recording on seismographs, Pascal said.

“If everyone is jumping in unison, that tends to amplify the signal so we can pick it up a little better,” he said.

“Whereas if it was just general crowd movement, as is the case even in the Grand Final at the MCG, we can still pick that up.”

The music legends kicked off the national leg of their Power Up World Tour, which kicked off in Europe in 2024, selling more than 2 million tickets for 24 shows there and sold out in North America.

A resident who lives 10 kilometers away told ABC they could listen to the concert.

“We have someone who lives across the road from his office in Richmond, and he said it was like he was at a concert, and it was very loud,” Pascal said.

Richmond residents took to social media, with multiple posts saying the sound level made them think their neighbors were the ones playing loud music.

Two others said they were able to hear the concert in Hawthorn – a suburb far from the MCG – while another said they were able to hear it in Balwyn, eight kilometers away as the crow flies.

While AC/DC literally rocked Melbourne all night, or at least for part of it, rock fans at the MCG couldn't meet the challenge set by the Swifties in 2024, he said.

“The biggest mentions we got were the three nights Taylor Swift played there,” he said.

The Environmental Protection Authority received two noise complaints.
