AC/DC shook Melbourne so hard it was picked up by seismic detectors

AC/DC's first show in their homeland in a decade was so powerful that sound waves registered on earthquake detection equipment. The band clearly took their 1980 hit “You Shook Me All Night Long” literally in Melbourne when they kicked off the Australian leg of their Power Up tour.

According to Australia's ABC News, an earthquake research center in the nearby city of Richmond picked up vibrations in the 2-5 Hz range, and locals also took to social media to discuss the incredible loud music. The show was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, just over two miles from the centre, but a resident living more than six miles away also told the ABC they heard the concert too.

However, Adam Pascal, the center's chief scientist, told the publication that seismology isn't just about how loud a concert sounds to the ear. “We're picking up the movement of the ground, we're not picking up sound from the air. So you have speakers on the ground that pump out the vibrations and they're transmitted through the ground, but also the crowds jumping up and down feeds the energy into the ground.”

Pascal also said that the enthusiasm of the audience is actually what pushes the concert into earth-shaking territory. “If everyone is jumping in unison, that tends to amplify the signal so we can pick it up a little better,” he said. “Whereas if it was just general crowd movement, as is the case even in the Grand Final at the MCG, we can still pick that up.” Pascal said AC/DC's vibrations don't match Taylor Swift's vibrations in 2024, which issued the biggest signals they've recorded from the show.

AC/DC's eponymous Power Up Tour debuted in Europe last year, selling more than 2 million tickets for 24 shows before selling out in North America.
