Stormy waves off the coast of Rossinger

A small earthquake was recorded off the west coast of Anglesey earlier this month, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS). The magnitude 0.4 quake was centered 5.6 miles (9 km) southwest of Rossnegger in the Irish Sea.

The earthquake was recorded at 7.55 am on Sunday 2 November, at a depth of 17 km, and there were no reports of any impacts on the ground. North-west Wales is known for its high levels of seismic activity, and in July, a smaller magnitude 0.2 tremor was detected 9.9 miles (16 km) northeast of Amlwch, North Anglesey.

The following month, a more significant 1.6 magnitude event struck the village of Gwynedd in Llwyndyrus on the Llŷn Peninsula.

In September, a 0.7 magnitude tremor was recorded in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Llangender.

Powys has been particularly active this year, with at least six earthquakes recorded in the county in the past three months, North Wales Live reports.

For decades, scientists have been exploring possible links between solar activity and seismic events.

This week, a series of solar flares caused two geomagnetic storms above Earth, with the second feeding the first to form a massive “cannibal storm.”

It was among the largest solar storms in the past 20 years.

There is speculation that geomagnetic storms could exert pressure on the Earth's magnetosphere, creating surface pressure that may trigger earthquakes between tectonic plates.

While a direct link has not been confirmed, scientists hope that analyzing solar activity will help predict when earthquakes will occur.

A 2022 Japanese study suggested a possible causal relationship between sunspot activity and seismic patterns.

A later study released this year suggested that solar heating of the Earth's surface could affect rock properties and groundwater movement, likely playing a minor role in earthquake activity.

Although this will not be the primary cause of seismic events, it is hoped that incorporating data on solar activity into Earth temperature models will enhance the accuracy of future earthquake predictions.
