Archaeologists find real ruins of the sunken city of Atlantis hidden beneath the lake after it was destroyed by an earthquake

A REAL sunken city modeled after Atlantis has been discovered under a lake by wealthy people – after it was destroyed by an earthquake.

Bovins made this pioneering discovery beneath the surface of the eighth deepest lake on Earth, which is located in eastern Kyrgyzstan.

Under the waters of Lake Issyk-Kul, researchers found a medieval cemetery, baked brick structures, and several unusual ceramic artefacts.

During the Middle Ages, the lake is said to have served as a stop on the famous Silk Road, a land route for travelers and traders from the Far East to Europe.

Scientists found parts of the amazing city in four areas of water, at depths ranging from one to four metres.

It was flooded in the Toro-Aegir complex, which is located near the northwestern point of the lake.

In the first area, they discovered several structures built of baked brick, including one containing a millstone, which was used to grind grain into flour.

The Russian Academy of Sciences team also found traces of a public building, which they believe could have been a mosque or a bathhouse.

“The site we are studying was a major city or trading center on a major section of the Silk Road,” one of the researchers said.

A spokesman for the Russian Geographical Society said: “All this confirms that an ancient city actually existed here.”

Scientists say that the area was devastated a long time ago due to a major earthquake that sank the settlement under water in the 15th century.

Scientists believe that local residents abandoned the area before the horrific disaster occurred.

Then it was abandoned for hundreds of years as generations of societies forgot about it.

But it is believed that Bedouins settled there later, with some small villages remaining on the lake shore.

In the second area explored, researchers identified an Islamic cemetery dating back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

Buried bodies bearing signs of traditional Islamic rituals were found.

Their skeletons were facing north, with their faces facing the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Scientists found two bodies, a man and a woman, and are still analyzing the ancient remains.

The third area revealed evidence of subsequent settlement expansion.

This included additional buildings and a former burial site that was eventually replaced by new buildings.

In the fourth area, circular and rectangular structures made of mud brick were discovered, in addition to layers of buried soil.
