Archaeologists have discovered a 'submerged city' resembling Atlantis, which was destroyed by a 'horrific earthquake'.

Researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences have discovered “traces of a submerged city” in Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan.

The lake is the eighth deepest lake in the world, with a maximum depth of 2,192 feet (668 metres), but the remains were discovered at a surprisingly shallow level.

A medieval cemetery, brick buildings and large ceramic vessels are among the items found in the Toru-Aygyr complex located to the northwest of the lake.

The archaeologists analyzed four different underwater areas near the shore ranging from 3 to 13 feet deep.

Researchers believe that the city included Muslim prayer houses, schools, baths, and perhaps a grain grinding system used to make bread.

A spokesman for the Russian Geographical Society, which funded the project, said: “All this confirms that an ancient city once existed here.”

“The site we are studying was a city or a major trading center,” added Valery Kolchenko, expedition leader and researcher at the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic.

However, it is believed to have disappeared after an earthquake in the 15th century that is comparable to the Pompeii disaster in terms of devastation.

“According to our assessment, at the time of the disaster, residents had already left the settlement,” Kolchenko said.

“After the earthquake disaster, the population of the region changed radically, and the rich medieval settlement civilization no longer existed.”
