Myanmar | Earthquake – Operation Update No. 4 (MDRMM023) – Myanmar

Description of the crisis

On March 28, 2025, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, with its epicenter between Sagaing and Mandalay. Twelve minutes later, a powerful 6.7 magnitude aftershock followed, deepening the devastation caused by the first quake. The earthquakes resulted in widespread destruction in five states and territories: Sagaing, Mandalay, Southern Shan, Nay Pyi Taw and Bago, where an estimated 17.2 million people were already facing complex humanitarian challenges.

As of September 5, 2025, the SSPC's official news outlet reported that the death toll had risen to 3,815 people, with an additional 5,104 injured and five people still missing. More than 1.35 million people were affected by the earthquake and 200,000 people were internally displaced. The ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Coordination and Disaster Management Center in Myanmar highlighted that the damage includes 11,995 completely damaged homes, 40,019 partially damaged homes, 2,596 schools, 713 hospitals, 14,367 religious buildings and temples, as well as 9,970 offices and other buildings. The World Bank's Myanmar Economic Monitor expects a 2.5% contraction in GDP in fiscal year 2025/2026 in Myanmar, mostly due to the effects of the earthquake. Direct damage to physical assets is estimated at US$11 billion, equivalent to 14 percent of Myanmar's GDP.

Physical access to most affected areas has now been restored. The Yangon-Mandalay corridor is open and operational for heavy vehicles, and roads between Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw remain accessible via both the expressway and regular roads. Telecommunications and mobile coverage have largely stabilized, and electricity supplies have returned to pre-earthquake levels. Market monitoring indicates a gradual return to normalcy across market systems in earthquake-affected areas. Although slight regional differences remain, overall price stability and improved accessibility reflect strengthened supply chains and vendor confidence. The majority of markets are now operational, with most towns designated as fully functional, and restocking times for essential food, water, sanitation, and non-food items remain constant. As transport networks and trade routes recover, local markets continue to serve as reliable platforms for flexible, multi-purpose or conditional assistance, supporting the transition from relief to recovery.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
