At least ten people were killed and more than 500 others injured when a moderate-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh, hitting Dhaka and other areas of the country on Friday morning.

According to the US Geological Survey, the 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck at 10:38 a.m. local time in Bangladesh, and its epicenter was in the Gorachal district of Narsindi district, about 25 kilometers from Dhaka.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was at a depth of 10 kilometers.

However, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the quake measured 5.7 magnitude.

Among the dead, three were killed when the fencing of a five-storey building fell on them during the earthquake in Old Dhaka's Kochitoli area, a security guard was killed in Mugda, Dhaka, five, including a 10-year-old boy, were killed at separate locations in Narsindi, and a one-year-old girl died in Rupganj in Narayanaganj.

The deceased are Rafi’ al-Islam, 20 years old, Abdul Rahim, 48 years old, Mehrab Hussein, 12 years old, Maqsoud, 50 years old, Omar, 10 years old, his father, Delwar Hussein, 37 years old, Kazem Ali Bhuyan, 70 years old, Nasir al-Din, 50 years old, Sultan Mia, 40 years old, and Fatima, one year old.

Offices, homes and commercial buildings witnessed rapid evacuations as the streets were filled with whistles and shouts immediately after the quake struck.

In Dhaka, three people were killed after the wall of a well-known building at Kochitoli in Panjshal in Old Dhaka collapsed during the earthquake, said Malik Ahsanuddin Sami, deputy commissioner of Lalbagh.

Furthermore, a building security guard was killed when a railing of a building under construction fell on him.

Five people, including a 10-year-old boy, died in Sadar, Shibpur and Palash upazila areas of Narsindi district, according to police and upazila administration.

Meanwhile, the one-year-old girl died and two others, including the mother, were injured after a wall of a tin building fell on them during the earthquake in Roopganj in Narayanganj, Mohammad Torikul Islam, officer-in-charge of Roopganj, told New Age.

He said that the wall fell on them while they were trying to leave their homes during the earthquake.
