At least five people, including a child, were killed and more than 100 others injured after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Bangladesh, damaging buildings in the capital, Dhaka, authorities said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred in Gorachal district of Narsindi district, about 25 kilometers from Dhaka, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers on Friday morning.

The police said that three passers-by were killed when building barriers fell on them in the capital, adding that several people were injured in separate incidents when parts of the buildings collapsed.

Dhaka Police Officer Ashish Kumar Ghosh said that two of the victims died on the spot while another succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Mitford Hospital.

It was not immediately known how and where the other two victims died.

The ongoing Test cricket match between Bangladesh and Ireland was halted briefly after tremors hit the Sher-e-Pangla National Stadium in Mirpur. “Oh my god. Play has been stopped here due to a slight tremor/earthquake,” Cricket Ireland said on Channel X.

“We felt a strong tremor and buildings shook like trees,” Dhaka resident Suman Rahman told Reuters.

“The stairs were crowded as people rushed down. Everyone was terrified, and the children were crying.”

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake was caused by a reverse fault at a shallow depth within the Indian plate.

Muhammad Yunus, head of the South Asian country's interim government, urged people to remain calm while authorities assessed the damage.

“We urge everyone to remain alert and not pay attention to any kind of rumors or misinformation,” he said in a statement. He added: “Further guidance will be provided through hotlines and official channels if necessary. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens.”

Tremors were also felt across the border in the Indian cities of Kolkata, Guwahati, Agartala and Shillong. However, no damages were reported.

While northern and southeastern Bangladesh are known for their seismic activity due to tectonic interactions between the Indian and Eurasian plates, central Bangladesh is generally considered seismically quieter.

Since 1950, only 14 earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 or greater, including two magnitude 6 events, have been recorded within 250 kilometers of the area affected by Friday's quake.
