Five people were killed and more than 450 others injured in the Bangladesh earthquake

At least five people have died, including a child, and more than 450 others have been injured after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh.

The epicenter of the earthquake was near the Narsindi area, about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.

People rushed from apartment buildings as buildings shook and makeshift structures collapsed. At least 10 students were injured in a stampede while trying to leave Dhaka University on Friday.

“We have never witnessed an earthquake this strong in the past five years,” said the country's environment advisor, Syeda Rizwana Hassan.

At least three people were killed when a barricade and debris fell from a five-storey building in Dhaka's Armanitola area, Deputy Commissioner of Police Malik Ahsanuddin Sami said.

Nitai Chandra D Sarkar, director of the department's surveillance division, said 461 people were reported infected across the country, including 252 in Ghazipur district north of Dhaka.

Sarker told the BBC: “Our main task at the moment is to assess the losses and damage. We have not yet seen the challenge of rescuing from the rubble or managing the debris at this level.”

“I have never felt such a tremor in all 30 years of my life. We were in the office when the furniture started shaking,” Bengali Sadman Sakib told Reuters news agency.

“We ran down the stairs into the street and saw other people already on the road.”

A student named Abdullah, who was asleep at the time of the earthquake, told Reuters that the entire building was shaking.

The tremors were felt in the eastern Indian states bordering Bangladesh, but there were no reports of serious damage.

The earthquake caused Ireland's second cricket Test match in Bangladesh to be temporarily halted.

Coaches and non-participating players gathered at the border, while those present took shelter in the stands. The match was stopped for three minutes, but play soon resumed.

Ireland coach Heinrich Malan said: “I've been involved in a few earthquakes since my time in New Zealand.
