The earthquake occurred at 10:38 a.m. local time on Friday, November 21, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Videos obtained by NBC News showed the moment the quake struck, causing many to flee for safety as buildings shook around them.

“We have never witnessed an earthquake this strong in the past five years,” Syeda Rizwana Hassan, an environmental affairs advisor, told the BBC.

Fire service personnel are working at the scene after at least three people were reported killed on the spot when a building fence collapsed following an earthquake in Bangladesh.

The epicenter of the quake was in Gorachal district of Narsindi district, about 16 miles from the capital, Dhaka, according to the Associated Press, which reported the death toll currently stands at eight people.

Among the dead were two children, according to local newspaper Prothom Alo. A 10-month-old baby died in Roopganj after a wall collapsed, injuring the baby's mother and another person.

Police said that three others died on a street in Dhaka after the wall of a building collapsed, according to the BBC and Reuters.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that more than 450 people were injured in the earthquake. Among them were 10 students who were injured during a stampede at Dhaka University.

Prothom Alo reported that at least four students were injured after jumping from a residence hall on the same campus.

Officials reportedly said that 10 people were injured at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and 10 others were injured at Taj al-Din Medical College Hospital in Ghazipur.

Also in Ghazipur, more than 150 people were said to have been injured at the garment factory, Denimash Ltd.

Health advisor Nourjahan Begum told reporters that several people being treated for earthquake-related injuries at a local hospital were in critical condition, according to Reuters.

“Our main task at the moment is to assess casualties and damage,” said Nitai Chandra D Sarkar, director of disaster management at the BBC. “We have not yet seen the challenge of rubble rescue or debris management at this level.”
