Scotland fans caused something of a mini-earthquake with their raucous celebrations after two dramatic stoppage-time goals against Denmark saw Steve Clarke's side participate in their first World Cup since 1998.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) recorded seismic activity equivalent to a “very small earthquake” in the aftermath of Kenny McLean's 98th-minute strike just down the halfway line, hurling Kasper Schmeichel to send Hampden Park into a state of euphoria.

BGS said McLean's target was picked up by its observers at the Glasgow Geothermal Observatory in Dalmarnock, about two kilometers from Hampden.

The reading taken between 9.48pm and 9.50pm local time – when McLean's audacious shot hit the net – was measured as between -1 and zero on the Richter scale and produced the equivalent of 200 kilowatts, enough to power between 25 and 40 car batteries.

It was the second blast of noise to occur in stoppage time, as Kieran Tierney's stunning 93rd-minute strike gave Scotland a crucial 3-2 lead to clinch direct World Cup qualification from the Danes.

Tierney's goal also registered on the Richter scale, as did the final whistle on Tuesday, which confirmed Scotland's place in next summer's finals with a 4-2 win.

Stadium events causing seismic activity in Scotland are not unheard of. Taylor Swift's concerts last year in Edinburgh were also recorded on the Richter scale.
