Experts have warned that a stronger earthquake could hit Bangladesh after 10 people were killed in a 5.7-magnitude earthquake.
Experts have reportedly warned the Bangladesh government of the possibility of strong earthquakes in the future, and that failure to act now could lead to greater losses. They also urged the Bangladesh government to take immediate action after an earthquake claimed the lives of at least 10 people in the country.
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday morning, killing at least 10 people and causing extensive damage to buildings, mostly in central parts of Bangladesh, including the capital, Dhaka.
Three light earthquakes also shook the country on Saturday. According to a report published by the Daily Star on Sunday, Friday's earthquake “reveals Dhaka's fragility.”
The Dhaka District Administration confirmed damage to at least 14 buildings, while Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakha (RAJOC) put the number at more than 50 buildings. Officials said the number is expected to rise as inspections continue.
“We are still working. Many other buildings will be identified,” the newspaper quoted Rajuk Chairman Muhammad Riazul Islam as saying.
Experts warn
Professor Mehdi Ahmad Ansari of the Civil Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) said the damaged buildings should be immediately assessed and prioritized according to the risks.
He warned that a stronger earthquake could lead to catastrophic collapses, adding that timely action could avoid greater losses.
“I think these (recent) earthquakes are a harbinger of a bigger one. We must be prepared for that,” Ansari said.
Dhaka is one of the 20 most earthquake-prone cities in the world
Dhaka is considered one of the 20 most earthquake-prone cities in the world due to its high population density and huge number of dilapidated buildings, many of which are located in the old part of the capital.
The region has a long history of strong earthquakes, with five major tremors occurring between 1869 and 1930 measuring more than 7.0 on the Richter scale.
Experts have long warned that Bangladesh could be hit by a major earthquake any time soon, because it is located in a major tectonic plate collision zone, crossed by several active fault lines, exposing the country to high seismic risks.
Ansari recommended that Rajuk issue public notices urging homeowners to evaluate their buildings and submit structural reports, which experts can then review for further guidance.
While visible damage remains limited, he warned that many buildings may have suffered internal stresses.
In 2022, Rajuk identified 42 buildings in Dhaka, Ghazipur and Narayanganj as being at immediate risk, and ordered eviction and demolition within three months. Another 187 require retrofitting. However, the newspaper said that most of the directives were not implemented.
High-risk structures include government-owned buildings and autonomous bodies such as Department of Educational Engineering, Department of Health Education, LGED, Jagannath University, Dhaka University, Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board, Institute of Leather Technology and Bangladesh Medical University Hospital.
Responding to a question about the stalled measures, Chief Rajuk Islam said that most of the buildings are owned by the government and require a new re-evaluation at the city level. He said hazardous buildings are listed, closed or decontaminated as necessary.
“This earthquake is a big warning. Science indicates the possibility of an even greater shock in the future,” he said.
Seismologist Syed Humayun Akhtar has warned that the Indo-Burma subduction zone is accumulating strain capable of generating a major seismic event, potentially of very large magnitude.
RAJOC, the agency responsible for monitoring compliance from planning to construction, has long faced criticism for inadequate oversight.
Rajuk “always wakes up after a major accident,” said Professor Munaz Ahmad Noor, vice president of the Bangladesh Earthquake Society, citing chronic manpower shortages.
He stressed strict adherence to the Bangladesh National Building Code, noting that previous failures in implementation had left many structures vulnerable. Nour said that errors often do not occur in the design but during implementation, such as placing reinforcement incorrectly despite the correct drawings.
