A small earthquake shakes parts of northwest Georgia

A 2.4 magnitude earthquake struck Lafayette, Georgia, early Sunday morning.

ATLANTA, Ga. — If you felt a little rumble early this morning, you're not imagining things. A small earthquake was recorded just north of the viewing area in Atlanta. It's something we don't see every day, but it happens from time to time here in Georgia.

According to preliminary data, a 2.4 magnitude earthquake occurred about 2.5 miles southwest of Lafayette, Georgia. The quake occurred at about 6:30 a.m. and was shallow enough that some people nearby may have felt a quick tremor or shaking, but damage is not expected with an earthquake of this size.
