Series of earthquakes shake California near Santa Rosa: What to know

At least seven earthquakes have struck California in the past 24 hours, according to data from the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Data show that the magnitude of the earthquakes ranges from 2.5 to 4.1 magnitude. At least two of the quakes were centered near Santa Rosa, next to the geysers, according to the map.

There were no reports of damage or casualties, and no tsunami warnings were issued.

Newsweek reached out to the USGS via email Monday for more information.

Why does it matter?

The area lies above several large fault lines, including the Rodgers Creek Fault, which scientists have identified as a likely candidate to produce a large earthquake in the future.

According to a USGS fact sheet, the Rodgers Creek Fault runs directly beneath Santa Rosa and has a history of producing devastating earthquakes, such as the 1969 quake that caused extensive property damage in the city.

With more than seven million people in the wider Gulf region, the risk of earthquakes also has serious implications for disaster preparedness, infrastructure resilience, and public safety.

Experts have warned that the recent quakes, although moderate, may only relieve a little pressure along the faults, keeping the possibility of a larger event in the future open.

What do you know?

Earthquakes struck up and down the California coast on Sunday and Monday. A USGS map shows the hurricane struck as far north as the Oregon-California border and as far south as Highland, California.

The two struck near Santa Rosa at very shallow depths, meaning they were felt more widely.

California is vulnerable to seismic activity due to its location along the San Andreas Fault System, a major fault line that has caused some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history.

The San Andreas Fault extends approximately 750 miles from the Salton Sea in Southern California to Cape Mendocino in Northern California. It passes near major urban areas, including Los Angeles and San Francisco.

What happens during an earthquake?

Earthquakes are caused by the sudden release of energy along fault lines, causing the ground to shake as seismic waves radiate away from the epicenter.

Faults in California, such as Rodgers Creek and the broader San Andreas systems, involve tectonic plates grinding against each other horizontally, and are classified as strike-slip faults.

These ruptures can occur without warning and range from minor tremors to devastating shocks, depending on the amount of energy discharged.

Moderate earthquakes usually cause things to fall off shelves and get on nerves, but may not cause visible structural damage.

However, each event serves as a reminder for residents to review their emergency plans and supplies, as even minor earthquakes can sometimes be a precursor to larger shocks. The USGS estimates the probability of a larger earthquake occurring at 5 percent following a moderate earthquake within three days.

Where were the epicenters of the earthquakes?

According to USGS data, the seven earthquakes occurred over two days and were centered near the city of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County. Initial readings placed the epicenters mostly along or near the Rodgers Creek fault, a fault known for its seismic activity and historical potential for damaging earthquakes.

Some of the quakes were shallow, occurring at depths between 3 and 7 miles below the surface, which could increase their perceptibility on Earth.

Similar swarm activity has been recorded in the area previously, with scientists warning that such patterns are often a feature of the region's complex geological landscape.

Where were the earthquakes in relation to Santa Rosa?

Most of the seismic activity recorded was localized in the immediate vicinity of Santa Rosa, a city located in Northern California's wine country, about 55 miles north of San Francisco.

The earthquakes occurred near neighborhoods previously affected by historical tremors. These areas have in the past felt strong tremors, lost power, and experienced minor to moderate damage, such as falling objects and cracked pipes.

The unique geology of the Santa Rosa area — clayey soils and sedimentary basins — can increase ground shaking, according to USGS research.

What people say

“The Geysers Geothermal Field is located in a tectonically active region of Northern California,” the US Geological Survey (USGS) said in a post on its website. “The major seismic hazards in the region are due to large earthquakes that occur along regional faults located miles from the geothermal field, such as the San Andreas Fault and Healdsburg-Rodgers Creek. However, activities associated with drawing steam to produce electrical energy cause or incite small earthquakes that occur in the field, and these small earthquakes are often felt by those who They work in the field and nearby residents.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stated in a 2019 publication: “Santa Rosa is no stranger to earthquakes… Scientists have learned how underlying geology increases damage from shaking in Santa Rosa, have mapped where the Rodgers Creek Fault passes under the city, and discovered that this fault is capable of generating much larger earthquakes.”

What happens next

The USGS and other seismic agencies continued to monitor seismic activity following the series of earthquakes.

While the immediate risk of aftershocks or a larger event remains uncertain, scientists estimate that any moderate earthquake has a small chance of causing a stronger shock within a short period of time.

Local authorities did not report any injuries or serious damage due to these recent earthquakes.
