An earthquake shakes Somerset County on Friday

GLADSTONE, N.J. — Another earthquake has rocked Central Jersey. This time it was a 1.8 magnitude earthquake on Friday.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake occurred around 4:22 p.m. about 5 kilometers west-southwest of Gladstone in Somerset County.

The quake reportedly occurred 7.2 kilometers underground, according to the US Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes around the world.

The earthquake is considered a Level 3 earthquake according to the USGS Modified Mercalli intensity value with mild shaking.

The US Geological Survey described the quake by saying: “It was noticeably felt by people indoors, especially on the upper floors of buildings. Many people do not recognize it as an earthquake. Parked cars may shake slightly. Vibrations similar to a passing truck.”

A total of 153 people reported feeling shaken by the earthquake.

Several earthquakes have been reported recently in the Central and North Jersey area.

The last time an earthquake was recorded in the Hunterdon County area was on October 20, when a magnitude 1.6 earthquake was reported about 2 km east-northeast of Califon.

On August 12, a 1.2 magnitude earthquake was reported 6 kilometers northeast of Lebanon.

On August 5, a 2.7 magnitude earthquake was reported in Bergen County with its epicenter southwest of Hillsdale.

A 0.4 magnitude earthquake was also reported 6 km east-southeast of Califon on August 4.

On August 2, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake was centered in Hasbrouck Heights, in Bergen County.

Earthquakes are less common in the eastern regions of the United States than on the western edges because the East Coast does not lie on a tectonic plate boundary. The US Geological Survey said 13 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or stronger since 1950 have been recorded within 311 miles of the April 5 quake.

The strongest earthquake was the 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Mineral, Virginia, on August 23, 2011, which shook people from Georgia to Canada.
