A small earthquake in New Jersey causes mild shaking in several counties

If you felt some light shaking in your home late Friday night, you may have been among the dozens of New Jersey residents who felt a small earthquake.

A magnitude 1.8 earthquake occurred at 11:22 p.m. Friday, with its epicenter about 5.1 miles west-southwest of Gladstone in Somerset County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The US Geological Survey, which tracks daily earthquake activity around the world, received reports from about 150 people in New Jersey who said they felt Friday's quake.

The vast majority of reports came from Somerset, Hunterdon and Morris counties, but one came from Mercer County and two from Bergen County — about 40 miles from the epicenter.

All reports rated severity as Level 2 or Level 3, which is at the lower end of the 10-level severity scale used by the USGS.

Level 2 and Level 3 are considered minor earthquakes with “weak” shaking that can be felt by people indoors, especially those living on the upper floors of buildings.

Level 3 earthquakes can cause “vibrations similar to a passing truck.”

Friday's quake was the first to hit New Jersey since a small quake on October 20. This earthquake had a magnitude of 1.6 and was centered about 1.2 miles east-northeast of Califon in Hunterdon County.

Mild shaking was reported by people in several New Jersey counties, including Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Burlington, and Essex.
