Ukraine says it has reached a “common understanding” with the US on a peace deal aimed at ending the war with Russia. The proposal is based on a 28-point plan that the US presented to Ukraine last week. In a post on social media, US President Donald Trump said the original plan had been tweaked and “a deal may be close.” He will send his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Moscow to discuss the plan with Russian President Putin. The Kremlin said earlier that Russia had not yet been consulted on the new draft deal and warned that it might accept amendments to the original plan. Some of the key issues dividing Russia and Ukraine are reported to be unresolved so far, including security guarantees for Ukraine and control of several regions in the east of the country. European leaders have expressed skepticism that peace could be within reach. French President Emmanuel Macron said he saw “no will for a Russian ceasefire”, while the UK warned there was still a “long way to go”.
