A magnitude 4.0 earthquake shakes the Gulf region, likely to be followed by aftershocks

A minor earthquake struck California in the early morning hours of November 26

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake shook the Bay Area shortly after 6 a.m. local time on November 26. The quake is the largest yet in a series of recent activities near Gilroy, California.

The US Geological Survey initially estimated the earthquake's magnitude to be 4.3, but quickly revised its magnitude to 4.0. This type of review is typical in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake, as scientists analyze the data available to them.

The epicenter of the quake was at a depth of 1.7 miles and about five miles east of Gilroy, south of San Francisco Bay, and located about halfway between San Jose and Salinas, inland from the coast. The National Tsunami Warning Center quickly determined that the event did not pose any tsunami threat.

This earthquake is the latest in a series of geological activities occurring in the region. The US Geological Survey has identified 10 earthquakes in recent weeks that may be linked to this largest event yet. Previous tremors were mostly weaker than magnitude 2.0, which is not usually felt by people.

Since the magnitude 4.0 event, two smaller earthquakes have already occurred — located deeper in the Earth's crust than the larger one: first a 2.7 magnitude tremor just to the northeast, and then a 3.6 magnitude earthquake to the southwest of those events.
