A 4.6 magnitude earthquake hits the Big Island of Hawaii

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck the southeastern portion of Hawaii's Big Island on Wednesday night just before midnight local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The event occurred on the south side of Kilauea Volcano, according to the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency. The agency added that tsunami waves are not expected to occur as a result.

The US Geological Survey said in a press release that the quake was about three miles underground, and that the seismic event did not appear to be related to recent volcanic eruptions on Kilauea.

“The earthquake had no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes. The event followed the end of the Episode 37 lava flow on Kilauea by 10 minutes, but does not appear to be directly related to the eruption. Most of the earthquakes in this area are caused by movement of the south side of Kilauea,” the press release said, in part.

No damage caused by the earthquake was reported.
