A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck an island off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia on Thursday (November 27, 2025), according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), with no immediate reports of damage or tsunami warning.

The earthquake, which struck Simulu Island at 11.56 am (0456 GMT) at a depth of 25 km, prompted local residents on the island to leave immediately.

“I was sitting in a cafe, and suddenly the table shook. Many people ran out of buildings and houses,” Ahmadi, who like many Indonesians uses one name, told AFP.

“The earthquake was very long. I think maybe about seven seconds or so.”

He added that there were several aftershocks, but the tremors were relatively shorter compared to the previous earthquake, adding that he had not yet received any information about the damage.

The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning Center said after the quake that there was “no risk” of a possible tsunami caused by the quake.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency recorded a 6.3-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometers, adding that the tremor does not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago in Southeast Asia, is exposed to frequent earthquakes due to its location on the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean.

The arc of intense seismic activity, where tectonic plates collide, extends from Japan across Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake shook the island of Sulawesi in January 2021, killing more than 100 people and displacing thousands.

In 2018, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Palu, also on Sulawesi, killed more than 2,200 people.
