Nearly 500 earthquakes have struck Alaska over the past week, with one of the most recent quakes hitting the Anchorage area on Thanksgiving, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported.

“Alaska typically experiences a high level of seismic activity, and although nearly 500 earthquakes a week may seem like a large number, this is not unusual for the state,” Ezgi Karasuzen, a research seismologist at the Alaska Earthquake Center, told Newsweek. “In fact, we've actually seen a decrease in seismic activity this year compared to many previous years, so last week's numbers are not particularly notable in the broader context.”
