Women and girls in eastern Afghanistan continue to face heightened risks following the August 31 earthquake, as widespread destruction in Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman forced thousands to live in overcrowded temporary settlements. The combined effects of displacement, harsh winter conditions, and ongoing returns from neighboring countries are narrowing access to essential sexual and reproductive health services and increasing vulnerability to gender-based violence. More than 55,000 women of reproductive age – including more than 3,300 pregnant women – require ongoing care, while communications disruptions and growing instability along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border continue to disrupt aid and limit safe access to support.

UNFPA and its partners are maintaining life-saving services despite these restrictions, operating mobile health teams and maternal and child health centers that remain fully operational and staffed by female providers. Women and girls receive pre- and post-natal care, psychological first aid, gender-based violence response services, dignity kits, and emergency reproductive health kits. Psychosocial counseling centers in Kunar and Nangarhar support trauma survivors, while updated GBV referral pathways, community engagement mechanisms and safety audits strengthen protection in all affected areas.

To expand sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence services, replenish emergency stocks, and sustain operations through the winter, UNFPA needs US$5 million. To date, US$2 million has been mobilized, including additional recruitment support through NORCAP. Additional funding is urgently needed to ensure continuity of essential services for the most vulnerable women and girls.
