The earthquake early warning system has been activated in Quebec and Ontario

The Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system is now operational in Quebec and eastern Ontario. The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has welcomed this initiative from various levels of government.

The EEW system includes 200 earthquake detection sensors. If the earthquake is serious, an alert will be automatically issued through the National Public Alert System. It is then sent to broadcasters and cellular service providers.

People in affected areas also get a few extra seconds before strong shaking occurs. The farther people are from the epicenter, the more time is needed to prepare.

By encouraging people to take the alert seriously — “drop, cover and hold on” — lives could be saved, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) says in documents associated with the launch. The alert will only be sent in case of potentially harmful tremors.

Canada's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, made the announcement on November 27, along with the ministers responsible for civil security in the two provinces involved: Ian Lafreniere in Quebec and Gilles Dunlop in Ontario.

The Federal Ministry will also ensure that detailed messages are transmitted to infrastructure operators – for example, stopping trains, restricting traffic on bridges and tunnels, activating warning systems, etc. – before strong tremors begin, which could reduce damage and casualties.

The EEW system has been in operation since May 2024 in western British Columbia. The St. Lawrence Valley, the Ottawa River Valley in southern Quebec, and southeastern Ontario are at risk from serious earthquakes, says NRCan, which records more than 5,000 earthquakes in Canada each year.

Liam McGinty, Vice President of Federal Affairs at IBC, responded positively to the activation of the EEW system in areas of these two provinces that are most vulnerable to major earthquakes.

He also welcomed the federal government's recent commitment to consult with the property and casualty insurance industry on ways to ensure the stability of Canada's financial sector in the event of a severe earthquake.
