USGS sends 'false warning' for 5.9 magnitude earthquake near Dayton
The US Geological Survey sounded a false alarm about a 5.9 magnitude earthquake east of Dayton, Nevada, on Thursday morning.
“This was a false earthquake warning sent by the USGS ShakeAlert system,” Keren Bogolob, a seismologist at the Reno Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, told RGJ. “There was no earthquake. We are awaiting further information from the USGS. Thank you for your patience while we resolve this issue.”
At Roadrunner Cafe in Dayton, a regular customer said he heard about a 5.9 magnitude earthquake on the radio, but that came as a surprise to Shannon Mackey.
Mackie is the manager of the family-run breakfast place. “It was breakfast as usual,” she said when asked by the Reno Gazette Journal.
“Oh dear, I didn't feel a thing if there was anything,” Mackey said.
Dayton is located in Leon County, east of Carson City, Nevada.
Leon County sent out a notice confirming that residents “received a false alert for a 5.9 magnitude earthquake at 8:06 a.m. near Dayton. We are awaiting additional information and will share it when it is available. There is currently no danger to the public. We ask the public not to call 911.”
The alert was also sent to residents in Washoe County and even the Bay Area in California.
Real earthquakes that struck Nevada
While Thursday's report of 5.9 was a false alarm, Nevada has seen some major earthquakes. It is the third most seismically active state in the United States after California and Alaska, according to the National Park Service.
The state is riddled with fault lines, and Nevada has been struck by more than two dozen earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 and above in records dating back to 1860.
Here's a look at the highest-magnitude earthquakes in Nevada history, according to the USGS database.
The 10 largest earthquakes in Nevada history
7.1 — Fairview Peak Earthquake, December 16, 1954: The first of two major earthquakes occurred near Fallon just four minutes and 20 seconds apart. This was the largest of a series of earthquakes to rock the region beginning in the summer.
6.9 — Dixie Valley Earthquake, December 16, 1954: Aftershocks from the two earthquakes on December 16 were so extensive, they were still being recorded in 1963.
6.8 — Pleasant Valley Earthquake, October 3, 1915: An earthquake in rural southeastern Pershing County prompted an investigation into whether downtown Reno's Majestic Theater, about 100 miles from the epicenter, was safe for occupancy.
6.8 — Cedar Mountain Earthquake, December 21, 1932: The earthquake was felt strongly by residents of Reno, cracking building foundations, shattering hundreds of windows, and causing power outages in Fallon, Fernley, and Lovelock.
6.5 — Carson City Earthquake, June 3, 1887: Residents of northwestern Nevada were jolted from sleep before 3 a.m., cracking the capital's foundations. The Reno Evening Gazette reported that the quake made a “low rumbling noise” like distant thunder.
6.5 — Stillwater Earthquake, August 24, 1954: This earthquake was a harbinger of much larger earthquakes in December and perhaps the most destructive of the year. Buildings, roads and dams in the Falun region were severely damaged.
6.5 — Post-Canyon Earthquake, March 15, 1860: This earthquake was centered about 1.5 miles southwest of the present Switch Campus in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, and stunned residents of Carson City and Virginia City.
6.5 – Monte Cristo Range Earthquake, May 15, 2020: The May 15 earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.5, was the largest earthquake to hit Nevada since the 1954 earthquakes. Several sections of US 95 were damaged, but no other major damage was reported.
6.4 – Virginia City Earthquake, December 27, 1869: The Gold Hill Daily News said the earthquake and aftershocks were “extremely disgusting to almost all who wish to sleep and rest” and wondered “when will this folly cease.”
6.4 — Reno Earthquake, April 24, 1914: The largest of a series of earthquakes that lasted from February through April.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
