The US Geological Survey confirms that early warning of the Nevada earthquake was wrong, and is looking into the faulty early warning

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) issued — and then quickly withdrew — a false alert Thursday morning that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake had occurred near Nevada. The false alarm, which was issued just after 8am, caused widespread confusion as residents rushed to confirm whether any tremor had actually occurred.

A false alarm causes confusion

According to the USGS initial notification, a strong earthquake struck east of Dayton around 8:00 AM. Almost immediately, phones across western Nevada lit up with emergency alerts, prompting people to check neighbors, workplaces and social media to be sure.

But one thing became clear within minutes: no one felt anything.

Residents reported no shaking, despite the alert. Shortly after, the USGS quietly deleted the event from its website without providing an immediate explanation.

USGS and ShakeAlert issue clarification

A short time later, the agency's ShakeAlert system confirmed that the notification was incorrect.

“Earthquake alerts delivered at 8:06 a.m. have been cancelled. There was no M5.9 earthquake near Carson City, Nevada. We are currently investigating why the alerts were issued. We will provide more information as we learn more,” USGS ShakeAlert said in a post on X.

The USGS has not yet provided details about the cause of the false alarm, leaving many residents wondering whether the problem was caused by a faulty sensor, a software glitch, or some other technical error.

The investigation is ongoing

As of Thursday afternoon, the agency said it was continuing to investigate the source of the false alert. No correction or technical failure notice has yet been posted on the USGS website.
