US Geological Survey says another small earthquake occurred near Sparta | News

SPARTA, North Carolina (Fox Carolina) – The United States Geological Survey said another earthquake shook the area near the North Carolina-Virginia border, although not as strong as recent earthquakes.

The US Geological Survey says the earthquake measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale was reported shortly before 5 pm, and had its epicenter one mile southwest of Sparta, off Highway NC 18. The epicenter is also located about 29 miles west of Mt. Erie and 36 miles east northeast from Bonn.

As of writing, the agency says that about 7 people have reported feeling any effect.

The small earthquake is the most recent earthquake in the region. On August 9, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook the region, and its effects were even felt in northern South Carolina. Three others shook the area the next day, then two more recently last week.
