December 6, Magnitude 7 near the Canadian border

On Saturday, December 6, just before noon, a magnitude 7 earthquake was felt across a 500-mile radius around the epicenter, near Hubbard Glacier, about 60 miles north of Yakutat, Alaska. About three-quarters of a mile inside Canada (Figure 1), this event is technically outside Alaska. 2025 comes on the heels of a magnitude 6 near Susitna on Thanksgiving Day, and not long since Sand Point hit a magnitude of 7.3 in July, 2025 seems determined to remind Alaskans that we live in the middle of a cluster of active faults.

Saturday's quake was very shallow, so ground shaking was very strong within a 50-mile radius of the epicenter (Figure 2), and we expect to hear reports of damage to building foundations and items flying off shelves.

The location of the earthquake so far appears to be between the Fairweather Fault in Canada and the Totschunda Fault in Alaska (Figure 1). While we currently call it a rupture in one of the northern strands of the Fairweather fault system, it is worth noting that in 2010, then-graduate student Julie Elliott at the University of Alaska Fairbanks named the portion that ruptured today the Mosul Fault. The National Seismic Hazard Model picked up this name in 2023.

The earthquake rupture direction is consistent with the northwest-southeast orientation of the mapped faults in this area (Figure 1). Strong aftershocks—two above 5 degrees in the first 10 minutes, and 20 above 4 degrees in the first three hours—define the fault (Figure 1). At this time, the rupture seemed to extend for dozens of miles. As our analysts review aftershock centers in the coming hours and days, we expect the picture of this fault to worsen significantly. Aftershocks will continue, and their locations will help scientists better understand this part of the fault.

Although no tsunami warning was issued after this earthquake, it is worth noting that the world's largest tsunami, the Lituya Bay tsunami of July 1958, was initiated by a M7.8 earthquake on the Fairweather Fault. No landslides were reported after today's earthquake either. However, this event serves as a reminder that large earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis often go hand in hand in coastal Alaska.
