A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hits the Yukon/Alaska border

The earthquake occurred about 55 miles from Yakutat

On Saturday, December 6, 2025, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook the border between Alaska and Canada. The earthquake reportedly occurred at 11:41 a.m. Alaska time.

A tsunami is not expected, according to X.com from the US National Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake's epicenter was about 57 miles northeast of Yakutat, Alaska, according to the Canadian Earthquake Service.

Residents of Juneau, Haines and other cities in Southeast Alaska felt the shaking, KTOO reported. Comments on a Facebook post by the Alaska Earthquake Center also indicate that local communities in Alaska felt the quakes.

Aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.0 to 5.1 magnitude were reported.

The quake originated near the border of Yukon, British Columbia and Alaska, according to Alison Baird, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada. It was felt at least as far as Whitehorse, British Columbia, about 150 miles away, and possibly farther, Baird said.

Several aftershocks have been reported. Bird said people are reporting items falling off shelves.

Aftershocks measuring 5.3 magnitude were recorded, according to the Canadian Earthquake Service.
