More than 160 earthquakes hit Alaska within 24 hours after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake

Alaska saw a wave of seismic activity over the weekend, as a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a series of 164 tremors recorded in less than 24 hours, according to US Geological Survey (USGS) data.

The initial quake, which struck near Yakutat on Saturday, sent tremors across southeastern Alaska and parts of Canada, with aftershocks continuing throughout the day.

No injuries or serious damage were reported and no tsunami warnings were issued.

Alaska is one of the most seismically active areas in the country as it lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for frequent and sometimes devastating earthquakes due to the ongoing collision between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate.

The earthquake struck on Saturday at a shallow depth of about 6 miles, which increased the intensity of the tremors witnessed on the surface. Michigan Technological University classifies earthquakes with magnitudes between 7.0 and 7.9 as “major,” with the potential for severe damage if they occur near populated or developed areas.

Residents as far away as Anchorage and communities across the border in Canada's Yukon Territory reported feeling the quake.

During the 24 hours following the main earthquake, seismic networks recorded 164 earthquakes in the area. Many were aftershocks, including several recorded tremors exceeding magnitude 5.0. This number of aftershocks is not uncommon after a major seismic event as the crust adjusts along fault lines.

NASA's Earth Observatory notes that Alaska consistently records more significant earthquakes than any other state. Major historical earthquakes, such as the 8.7 magnitude Rat Islands earthquake in 1965, confirm this pattern.
