Evacuation orders issued in Japan after a strong earthquake triggered a tsunami warning

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday, prompting evacuation orders and a tsunami warning for parts of the coast.

A tsunami about 10 feet (3 meters) high could hit some coastal areas, including Iwate, Aomori and parts of Hokkaido, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The JMA said a tsunami height of 16 inches (40 cm) had already been observed in Aomori and Hokkaido.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake occurred at 11:15 p.m. local time (9:15 a.m. ET) about 44 miles (70 km) off the country's coast and at a depth of about 33 miles.

The CNN team in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, felt strong tremors during the earthquake, which lasted for more than 30 seconds.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara urged people in affected areas to evacuate to higher ground or move to safe buildings, such as evacuation shelters.

Kihara said there had been no reports of “anomalies at this time” at the country's Higashidori and Onagawa nuclear power plants. He added: “We have received reports that other nuclear facilities are currently being examined.”

New Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, elected in October, said her government would work closely with local officials to assess the damage and take emergency response measures.

She said the government “will act as a single entity under the principle of putting human life first.”

Japan is no stranger to severe earthquakes. It is located on the “Ring of Fire”, an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. The worst earthquake in modern Japanese history was the 9.1 magnitude Tohoku earthquake in 2011, which caused a large tsunami and nuclear disaster.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

CNN's Yumi Asada and Brandon Miller contributed to this report.
