The powerful earthquake that shook northern Japan on December 8 and sparked tsunami warnings is not expected to affect the United States, officials said.

According to the US National Tsunami Warning Center, no tsunami waves are expected to occur along the coasts of Alaska and Hawaii or the west coast states of California, Oregon and Washington.

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan's Aomori Prefecture shortly after 11 p.m. local time, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The agency initially said a tsunami up to 10 feet high could hit Japan's northeastern coast. Hours after the earthquake, tsunami waves 7 to 27 inches high were observed in several ports.

The earthquake sparked evacuation orders and led to travel delays across northern Japan.

Officials told reporters they were assessing the damage and would provide updates. Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reported that several people were injured at a hotel in Aomori.
