A strong earthquake in northern Japan causes a tsunami and 33 injuries | World news

A powerful earthquake struck northern Japan, injuring 33 people and causing a tsunami.

The 7.5-magnitude earthquake occurred around 11:15 p.m. local time, about 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori Prefecture.

Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said 33 people were injured, one of them in serious condition, most of whom were injured by falling objects.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said tsunami waves as high as 70 centimeters were measured just south of Aomori in the port of Koji in Iwate Prefecture, while levels of up to 50 centimeters hit other places in the region.

“I have never experienced such a big shaking before,” Nobuo Yamada, who owns a small shop in Hachinohe, Aomori, said in an interview with public broadcaster NHK.

Earlier, the meteorological agency issued an alert for the possibility of tsunami waves up to 3 meters/10 feet, with orders to evacuate 90,000 residents.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara urged residents to go to higher ground or seek shelter until the warnings are lifted.

He added that about 800 homes were without electricity, and that Shinkansen express trains and some local lines stopped working in parts of the region.

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said about 480 residents took shelter at Hachinohe Air Base, and 18 defense helicopters were mobilized to assess the damage.

While Satoshi Kato, vice principal of a public high school in the same city, encountered traffic jams and car accidents on his way to school as panicked people tried to flee.

Japan has recent experience in dealing with earthquake hazards — in 2011 one unleashed a tsunami that killed about 20,000 people and led to a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said today's quake caused about 450 liters of water to leak from the spent fuel cooling area at the Rokashō fuel reprocessing plant in Aomori.

The authority added that water levels remained within the normal range and there were no safety concerns.

The Japanese government has now lifted all remaining tsunami warnings, but warned people to remain alert for another week in the event of aftershocks.

Satoshi Harada, of the Meteorological Agency's Earthquake and Volcanology Department, warned that the 2011 quake could repeat itself.

“You have to be prepared, assuming a disaster like this could happen again,” he said.
